Catching Up

9 days ago (Friday)...
I got my ears pierced

Nana's family arrived

We all went to church then came home and prepared for my 16th birthday party which was held that evening

Was my 16th birthday, as well as violin lessons, a killer Spanish exam at the CC and the day ended with the best group class I've ever had

WE RESTED

Us children went to our grandparents, Mama and Dad went to an event a few hours away

Still at our grandparents, watched a few movies and played outside. Mama and Dad still gone

2 days ago (Friday)...
Met Mama and Dad in the early afternoon, went home, got ready and left for our church family retreat in the late afternoon. We didn't spend the night, but came home late (10:50pm)

Yesterday....
Drove *back* to the retreat center (50 min. away) in time for breakfast, spent all day there. The retreat ended around 3pm, we came home, threw on some "renaissance" costumes and left for a Reformation Day party at a friends' house (with a lot of friends from church). Arrived home at 10am.

Today....
Slept in a little, went to church and celebrated the first official Sunday of our new pastor, had bagels for lunch, came home to a hugely messy house and took a nap. My grandmother arrived around 3pm (while I was asleep), she'll be leaving tomorrow.

SO......

That's why I've been "out of blog" this week! I hope y'all understand. The winner for the giveaway has yet to be drawn and I'm *almost* done tallying up for the quotes quiz. Maybe they'll be up this evening.

Pictures of the past week will be coming, never fear! I really want to share all the excitement with y'all!!! Just hold tight...

Blessings,

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

First of all, here's a big "cyber" hug for dear Nan, who "sabotaged" my blog yesterday to give me a sweet Happy Birthday Hipy Papy Bthuthdu message! Love you, my dear!

And thanks to all of y'all who left me comments! I was in town all day on the 25th, so I didn't get on Blogger till late that night. Imagine my shock at having 30 comments to moderate!!! That's a record, BTW. Y'all are awesome!

My birthday and my birthday weekend were amazing. I have never had such a great birthday before. Pictures and details to come soon, since I'm sure they'll be interesting to y'all.

Don't forget to enter both the last fiesta and movie quotes quiz #12 before they close on the 30th and 31st respectively.

Happy Birthday, Jo!

A few weeks ago I was on vacation and Jo was babysitting my blog. I asked her to guest post for me and she initiated a "Southern Sabotage", which turned out to be one of the funniest post I've ever read so, of course, I didn't mind. But she did give me permission to "sabotage" her blog any time I like...so I am:) For those of you who are wondering, this is Näna  from By The Way and The Boutique Window.

Hipy Papy Bthuthu Thuthdu Bthuthdy, Jo!

It has been so wonderful to get to know you this last year! I'm sure your followers agree that you are lovely young lady. Being hard pressed to find girls who are really a picture of true femininity it is wonderful to know someone like you who has dedicated themselves to seeking God's best for you. So, to you from all of blog-land thank you!

Today on my day-by-day calendar was this picture and I couldn't help thinking how appropriate for Jo's birthday:

Emma would ask which is Jo and which is Nana but I really have no idea:)

Have a beautiful day, my dear!

Love you lots!

Näna

Movie Quotes Quiz #12

It's finally here!
My birthday, this blog's 1st anniversary and Movie Quotes Quiz #12!!!!

This has been an amazing year, thanks to all my 113 followers for making it so special and exciting! Let's see...since starting this blog I have:

1. Met FIVE of my blogging friends: Nana, KK, Rachel, Sarah and Charity
2. Gone from 0 to 113 followers!
3. Hosted 11 (almost 12!) quotes quizzes
4. "Met" so many sweet, godly, like-minded girls

And so much more than I can't list it all here!

Y'all probably know a lot about me at this point, and you've probably caught that I like to watch movies a little bit. While I know that there are many other more valuable ways to spend my time (and I do limit myself *a lot*) I do enjoy cuddling up on the sofa to watch a good movie. I've done movie reviews on this blog, posted about movies I've watched recently and I update the movie list on my profile pretty often. With that in mind, here's a test of your knowledge of Jo:

There are 16 quotes to guess ('cause I am sixteen today), and keep in mind that these are my favorite quotes from my favorite movies, not just ones that I'm trying to stump you with. Of course, the rules stay the same.

The Rules:
1. Don't look any of the quotes up on the internet, or any other "looking-up" device.
2. Submit your answers in a comment on this post. You may submit as many comments as you need to, depending on when you remember the different quotes.
3. You score one point for every correct answer you submit -that's telling me what movie the quote is from- and you can also earn an extra point by telling me who said the quote!
4. You MAY ask immediate family members (parents, siblings, pets, etc.) for help and you MAY watch a movie again to see if one of the quotes is in it (of course, that'd probably be a waste of time, but whatever :P

And now for the quotes....are you ready???

#1. "As I always say, 'If it's not "baroque", don't fix it!'"

#2. "Please [name], send me a telegram. I'll start it for you: 'Dear [name]...'"

"Dear [name], I'd like to tell you how I feel about you. Stop. Unfortunately, this wire is already too expensive. Sincerely, [name]."

#3. "He's my brother."

#4. "I'm sorry, I didn't catch the name. Would you mind spraying it again?"

#5. "Can you move at all?"
"Move?! You're alive! If you want I can fly!"

#6. "It's like America, but SOUTH!"

#7. "Cheaters never prosper, [name]!"

#8. "When did [name] leave?"
"Late - I-I mean early."

#9. "My grandpa said, 'Go out and tell 'em a joke - but give it plenty o' hoke!'"

#10. "...strength from God - and from you."

#11. "If you'll - just follow me."
"To the ends of the earth!"

#12. "You were the boy who took my hair ribbons and dipped my braids in ink!"

#13. "What's goin' on - buddy?"

#14. "[name], I've been thinking...."
"A dangerous pastime - "
"I know."

#15. "I knew there was more to you than money!"

#16. "[name] says when she grows up, she wants to have a line of beaus on a string and make them crazy for her. I'd rather have ONE in his rightful mind."

A few hard, most easy, one that I know NONE of y'all will get....it's all in there :)

NOTE: This quiz ends on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31st

And the promo button:

Be sure to link the button to this post if you put it in your sidebar.

Oh, how do y'all like the new design? It may be modified over the coming months, but it's certainly a new start!

This is one giveaway you will not want to miss! I'm so grateful that the lovely Long ladies agreed to host this giveaway!

So, this week's theme is "Tell Me A Story" and there are both questions to answer and suggested posts this week. This is the *easiest* week to earn points as well.....

#2: Do one or more of the suggested posts ~ 1 entry per post
#3: Follow my blog ~ 1 entry
#4: Put the Fiesta de Octobre button in your sidebar (if you haven't already) ~ 1 entry

The first ten questions are about BOOKS and LITERATURE, the next ten questions are about MOVIES and FILM, since both are ways that we tell stories :)

{1} It's nearly impossible to pick a favorite book, so what are your top THREE favorite books ? (other than the Bible :D)
{2} Who is your favorite heroine from literature? (if you need to list more than one, that's fine)
{3} Who is your favorite hero from literature? (see above note)
{4} Who is your favorite author? (see note above)
{5} What is your favorite type of book to read?
{6} If you could be a character from literature for one day, who would you be? Why?
{7} What type of reader would you call yourself? Are you an avid reader, passive reader, or even a non-reader??
{8} Do you like reading aloud?
{9} Do you like mystery stories?
{10}All of us have read a book at some point or another and disliked the way it ended or who married who, etc. What book(s) bother you like that, and what would you change about them?

{11} Just like books, it's *very* hard to pick a favorite movie. What are you top THREE favorite movies?
{12} When it comes to movie adaptions of books, are you a purist or do you not mind changes to the storyline?
{13} What is your favorite book-to-movie adaption?
{14} What is your favorite type of movie to watch?
{15} Do you like to watch movies with the lights off or on?
{16} DVD or VHS?
{17} When you watch a movie, would you rather watch it straight through or skip around to your favorite scenes?
{18} Subtitles?
{19} Do you make comments and ask questions during a movie, or sit in complete silence?
{20} If you could be in any movie (whether it's already been made or not) which movie would it be? Who would you want to be and why?

Don't forget to link up! Here's the linky:

The suggested posts for this month are:

1. Write a character overview for one of your favorite CHARACTERS (not actors) from either book or film. Be sure to tell us why you like them! NOTE: this character does NOT have to be the same one you mentioned in Question #2 or 3.

2. Write a review on a book you like or dislike. Do you best to convince us whether to read or not to read this book.

3. Write a review on your favorite movie, using the same guidelines as #2.

These are just three suggestions, but you can write about whatever you want as long as it's book/literature/film related! Talk about your favorite book-to-movie adaption: why you like the book, why you like the adaption, etc. Or even about an adaption that you DON'T like! Highlight a favorite actor or actress, author, hero or heroine, etc.

Once again, be creative! Get those juices flowin'! This is the last party, so give it your best!

The Linky:

Now for my answers to the questions:

{1} It's nearly impossible to pick a favorite book, so what are your top THREE favorite books ? (other than the Bible :D)
Okay....well, I love Little Women (bet you'd never guess that!), Rifles for Watie, Anne of Green Gables (the whole series)...and I'm already at three!!! I could go on and on and on.....just look at my profile to see a longer list :D

{2} Who is your favorite heroine from literature? (if you need to list more than one, that's fine)
Anne Shirley!!!! If I hadn't picked "Jo March" for my blog name, I'd have chosen "Anne Shirley." I love 'em both!!!!

{3} Who is your favorite hero from literature? (see above note)
This may be repetitive, but it's probably Gilbert or Laurie :P

{4} Who is your favorite author? (see note above)
Laura Ingalls Wilder. She writes from her heart, and I can relate to her books so much! If you haven't read my Little House reviews, you may want to :)

{5} What is your favorite type of book to read?
Probably historical fiction.

{6} If you could be a character from literature for one day, who would you be? Why?
I would be Laura Ingalls, right about the time of These Happy Golden Years. She got to go sleigh riding, wear hoop skirts and just...I don't know what! I'd love to be her for a day (or more :D)!

{7} What type of reader would you call yourself? Are you an avid reader, moderate or passive reader, or even a non-reader??
I would say avid, although I don't get a chance to read as much as I'd like.

{8} Do you like reading aloud?
Sometimes.

{9} Do you like mystery stories?
Sherlock Holmes and Nancy Drew, yes!

{10}All of us have read a book at some point or another and disliked the way it ended or who married who, etc. What book(s) bother you like that, and what would you change about them?
Well, I've always kinda wanted Jo March to have married Laurie....even though I do like Professor Bhaer.

{11} Just like books, it's *very* hard to pick a favorite movie. What are you top THREE favorite movies?
The Princess Bride is first! Star Wars IV, V & VI tie with Yankee Doodle Dandy for second and Anne of Green Gables comes in a close third.

{12} When it comes to movie adaptions of books, are you a purist or do you not mind changes to the storyline?
I'm a purist, although I do think that minor changes to the storyline actually enhance a film, like in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Princess Bride.

{13} What is your favorite book-to-movie adaption?
Ooooh....probably the BBC Pride and Prejudice or the 1995 Sense and Sensibility! Or maybe Swallows and Amazons...or Pollyanna (the Masterpiece Theatre version)...I don't know...

{14} What is your favorite type of movie to watch?
Old movies and musicals!!! I love Yankee Doodle Dandy (which is both) and Singin' in the Rain, and The Sound of Music..

{15} Do you like to watch movies with the lights off or on?
off, OFF, OFF!!!! Pitch black!

{16} DVD or VHS?
Depends. DVDs are easier to manuever, but I have this sentimental attachment to our Lady and the Tramp, Princess Bride, and Star Wars VHS tapes :P

{17} When you watch a movie, would you rather watch it straight through or skip around to your favorite scenes?
Straight through! NO SKIPPING! (unless of course, it's inappropriate or something like that. But you knew that.)

{18} Subtitles?
Yes...sometimes.

{19} Do you make comments and ask questions during a movie, or sit in complete silence?
I TRY not to talk, but sometimes I can't help it :P

{20} If you could be in any movie (whether it's already been made or not) which movie would it be? Who would you want to be and why?
I would love to be in a Jane Austen or a Little Women adaption, just to wear the neat costumes. :)

Hope to see lots of y'all enter this last party!

Of Webbers and Williams...

I wanted to write about my favorite composer, but the more I thought about it, the more I couldn't think of just ONE!!! Should I write about Chopin, Joplin, Mozart, or even Bach? Or should I write about a "non" classical composer? I thought about this while I was resting this morning (I'm a little under-the-weather) and decided that I'd highlight two (only two, I know!) of my favorite of the "modern" composers, just for something a little different.

To start:
Andrew Lloyd Webber
Phantom.jpg
I could listen to The Phantom of the Opera....well, to avoid an exaggeration, let's just say I could listen to it for a long time without getting tired of it. :) There's is something so inspiring about this score, it sends chills up my spine EVERY TIME I hear it -without fail. I moved my Phantom songs to the top of my playlist in the sidebar, so you can listen to them and see what I mean :D
When my parents were younger, they liked Phantom a lot and my Dad still does. He wants to take me to see it someday on stage. So far, all I've done is listened to the *entire* opera through several times on different occasions and listen to the songs whenever we put in our random shuffle CD. My siblings love the theme song, but don't care as much for "All I Ask of You" (my second favorite) and "The Music of the Night."

John Williams
What a composer!!! This man is truly talented. Here's something I'll bet you didn't know: John Williams *arranged* the soundtrack for Fiddler on the Roof. Yup! He didn't *write* the songs, but he did *arrange* them. And here's something else: about a month ago, when we had the Fiddler soundtrack on, I thought, "Boy, this song really sounds like it was written by John Williams...but of course it isn't." But I had to look at the case, and there it was: Music arranged by John Williams! I looked it up later and it was true. How fun!
But as much as Williams did a great job on arranging the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack, he did an even better job *writing* the music for Star Wars :) Like Phantom, this music never fails to inspire me and send the chills up and down my spine every time I hear it. In fact, Darth Vader's March has become the March family classic danger tune, hummed whenever something momentous is about to happen...like when Herod marched on scene during our Christmas play last year. *oops!* That was actually a mistake...no one could remember what we were supposed to hum so Titty started up The March. :P
I moved my John Williams music to the top of my playlist as well, so check it out!
NOTE: I have also heard that Williams' Indiana Jones soundtrack is really good as well, but I have not heard it.

Well, that's all I have time for today. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to write up a little something about two or three of my favorite "classic" composers :) We'll see...my grandmother is coming tonight and so begins the weekend's festivities.....

Just 6 Days Away...

Guess what Monday is!?!?!?!?! Well, yeah, it *is* my birthday and my blog's anniversary, but other than that? You don't know?

It's...

Group Class!!!

And not just any group class, it's the *first* group class of the year as well as the October group class.

So what?

Well, October group is really fun because no one has really *finished* a piece since the recital, so the group class is hodge podge of random pieces and parts of pieces thrown together in some kind of portfolio.

Example: Just this past Saturday was the Pride and Prejudice Tea (more on that later). I played the piece "Georgiana" from the 2005 P&P film. I'm playing that piece again on Monday for group class...as well as the Brahms waltz I've been working on (it's only two pages long and relatively easy) AND the Paragon Rag...which isn't *quite* finished yet, but it'll do.

I'm excited, and guess what our dessert is after class? Cake, of course! Why? Oh...did I mention Monday is my birthday? I might be a *little* excited about that too :)

A Song to Remember

Chopin is one of my favorite composers. Not my favorite, but ONE of my favorites :) Last winter, you may remember that my teacher hosted a Chopin birthday party. Well, she showed us clips of the movie "A Song to Remember" (long "out of print" and nearly impossible to find) and I really enjoyed it. Since this *is* "music week" over here, I decided to share one of my favorite scenes with you.

NOTE: The young fella in the blue coat is Frederic Chopin and the red-headed-ish guy playing the other piano is Franz Lizst. The man with the curly hair who looks like Uncle Billy from It's a Wonderful Life is Chopin's music instructor :)

Isn't it a great scene? If only I could sight-read like that....wishful thinking of course :D

~Fiesta de Octobre: Fiesta #3 - "A Musical Interlude"~

This is going to be my favorite week since I. LOVE. MUSIC!!! But first, the giveaway:

Isn't it lovely? Studio Samantha Design is a brand new Etsy shop for doll dresses, and at the last minute, the designers agreed to make something special for me to give away. For all those American Girl fans out there, this dress is made to fit an American Girl doll, or any other 18" doll.

NOTE: the giveaway is for the DRESS, NOT the doll :)

Here are some more pictures for y'all to enjoy:

The ribbon is NAVY BLUE, although it looks black. Trust me, we tested it over and over again :)
ANOTHER NOTE: The sash and the hair ribbon come with the dress!

~

So, this party has questions *and* suggested posts because I'm going to have so much fun with this party! Trust me, I'll probably be posting everyday this week :D

¡mandatory! #1: Fill out the fiesta questions below ~ 2 entries
#2: Do one or more of the suggested posts ~ 1 entry per post
#3: Follow my blog ~ 1 entry
#4: Favorite the Studio Samantha etsy shop ~ 1 entry
#5: Put the Fiesta de Octobre button in your sidebar (if you haven't already) ~ 1 entry

Leave one comment with a list of each of the things you did to enter the giveaway. Put each item on a different line so it's easy for me to count them up. On the days you do the "extra" posts, leave one comment for each post. So, a sample comment would look like this:

Hey Jo! This giveaway/fiesta event sounds really neat! Here's what I did to join the fun:
1. I'm following your blog
2. I just posted my fiesta question answers on my blog and put my name in the Linky
3. I favorited the Studio Samantha etsy shop
4. I'm planning on doing a suggested post, and I'll be back to link up when I do.

The questions are divided into two sections: one pertaining to musical instruments and "classical" music, the other half of the questions are about more modern music that you would normally listen to.

The Questions:

{1} What musical instrument(s) do you play?
{2} How long have you been playing that instrument(s)?
{3} What is your favorite era of music: Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary?
{4} Why? (in reference to the above question)
{5} Who is your favorite composer? (If you're drawing a blank, click here for a nice long list to pick from :D)
{6} Do you like jazz music? Why or why not?
{7} Are one of those folks who could play their musical instrument for hours and love every minute of it? (or...just about every minute?)
{8} Would you rather listen to music or play it?
{9} Do you like to perform in front of people, or would you rather not?
{10} What's one thing you love about your instrument?

{11} What is your favorite genre of music to listen to?
{12} Would you rather listen to an entire CD (or playlist) of just one artist, or a random shuffle list or CD?
{13} Do you like listening to movie soundtracks?
{14} Does listening to music while doing schoolwork distract or help you?
{15} Radio, CD or iPod/mp3 player?
{16} Do your siblings like to listen to the same music you do?
{17} Do you like to "sing along" with the songs you know, or would you rather just listen to them?
{18} Do you like to listen to "old music", a.k.a. the music your parents listened to way back in the day? (not that our parents are old or anything....)
{19} Do you like rap music? (random question, I know)
{20} Ready for Christmas music yet?

When you've posted up your answers to the question, DON'T FORGET TO LINK UP! :) Here's the Linky:

The suggested posts for this party are a little different than previously. You get to post on whatever you want, as long as it pertains to music! If you need to prompts, though, here are some ideas:

#1. Post about your favorite song - be sure to post the lyrics, why you like it, what it makes you feel like, etc.
#2. Post about your favorite "classical" piece - why you like it, what it makes you feel like, can you play it yourself, etc.
#3. Post about your favorite music artist - why you like their music, which song of theirs you like best, etc.
#4. Post about your favorite composer (following the same guidelines for #3)
#5. Post up videos of people playing different music pieces on the instrument you play yourself or the one you like best to listen to. Even better, post up videos of yourself! (all you have to show are your fingers if you're playing a stringed instrument or piano)

Be creative! Music is so interesting and so fun to play around with! Have fun!

Here's the Suggested Posts Linky:

Now for my answers to the questions:

{1} What musical instrument(s) do you play?
I play piano and violin, but I like piano much better. I will probably warm up to violin, but I've been playing piano too long to adjust easily to a whole new fingering system and violins SQUEAK! Pianos are too dignified to squeak :D

{2} How long have you been playing that instrument(s)?
My teacher and I just calculated recently that my first piano recital was in 2002, so that means I started piano in 2001 and so count 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and now 2010 so that's TEN YEARS of piano as of this fall!!! Oh, and I've been taking violin for about...a month :D

{3} What is your favorite era of music: Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary?
Ooooh, definitely Romantic! Baroque (that'd be Bach) is okay, Classical (Mozart) is better, but Romantic (Chopin) is lovely! Contemporary, when it refers to Scott Joplin, is fun too :)

{4} Why? (in reference to the above question)
Because Romantic music is so expressive and I can really become "part of it" when I play. I like Contemporary/Ragtime because it reflects my personality :D

{5} Who is your favorite composer? (If you're drawing a blank, click here for a nice long list to pick from :D)
I didn't need the list to shout SCOTT JOPLIN and FREDERIC CHOPIN!!!! That reminds me, someone asked Peter a few weeks ago who my favorite composer was. He thought for a minute, racking his brain to remember, and then said (with confidence) "Scott Chopin!" Close buddy :)
EDIT: I just remembered that I really like the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and John Williams too. I don't know how those two slipped my mind at first! But see, I was thinking more "classic" composers...anyway, these rank *real* high up on the list. Oh, and Leonard Bernstein!!!

{6} Do you like jazz music? Why or why not?
I like to listen to it, but I don't like to play it....very much at least. Linus and Lucy is fun, of course, but I'd rather listen to Gershwin than play him.

{7} Are one of those folks who could play their musical instrument for hours and love every minute of it? (or...just about every minute?)
You know why I wrote this question??? Because that's me all over!!! If only I could play for hours...

{8} Would you rather listen to music or play it?
Depends...I want to be able to play EVERYTHING I hear (just ask Leia and Titty) but there are definitely some songs that I prefer to listen to than to play.

{9} Do you like to perform in front of people, or would you rather not?
I didn't used to because it made me nervous, but now I love to play in front of people *because* it makes me nervous! Funny how one grows out of things like that... :)

{10} What's one thing you love about your instrument?
The piano can makes such wide range of sounds, and I love to play a quiet song (like "Mrs. Darcy" from the Pride and Prejudice book) and then make the piano ring with a  song like "The Maple Leaf Rag" or "He's a Pirate". I can express myself on a piano, and often the music I choose to play reflects my mood.

{11} What is your favorite genre of music to listen to?
I don't know! Soundtracks, maybe?

{12} Would you rather listen to an entire CD (or playlist) of just one artist, or a random shuffle list or CD?
Random shuffle all the way!

{13} Do you like listening to movie soundtracks?
Yup, my favorite is The Princess Bride with The Sound of Music and Phantom of the Opera close behind.

{14} Does listening to music while doing schoolwork distract or help you?
It helps me so much! Mama read somewhere that Mozart helps some children with Math. I'm willing to try ANYTHING at this point (:D) so I ripped a CD of Mozart to Leia and my school computer. Listening "A Little Night Music" and "Sonata in C" each morning gets me off to a great start and who knows, it may actually help with Geometry! :)

{15} Radio, CD or iPod/mp3 player?
Radio at Christmas time, CDs in the car, iPods when I'm alone (but I don't have one of my own, I used to us Mama's until it broke)

{16} Do your siblings like to listen to the same music you do?
Most of the time...they don't really like TPB or POTO very much though, and they *always* want to skip "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" from the TSM soundtrack and I love that song! (I wonder why....it's not like I'm almost sixteen or anything...)

{17} Do you like to "sing along" with the songs you know, or would you rather just listen to them?
Both, depends on where I am and whom I'm with

{18} Do you like to listen to "old music", a.k.a. the music your parents listened to way back in the day? (not that our parents are old or anything....)
Yes! Some of my favorite singles are from old stuff my parents used to listen to :)

{19} Do you like rap music? (random question, I know)
Not at all...

{20} Ready for Christmas music yet?
Believe it or not, yes! (don't let Mama see that....)

Okay, off you go! Link up, post and have fun!!!
